Day 5: Speyer

Day 5: Day Trip to Speyer (Friday, July 4)

By Brianna and Grace

Today we took local busses from Walldorf to visit Speyer, a small city known for its large Roman cathedral (Dom) and Judenhof, a preserved synagogue ruins from the 12th century.  We first visited the Judenhof and learned about the vibrant Jewish community that began in Speyer in the 1100s. We learned about the mikvah (literally “collection of water”) which is a religious cleansing ritual to restore purity.  The small bath was built underground, using natural groundwater and rainwater.

Speyer Dom was beautiful and the excellent tour guide was very knowledgeable about the long history of the dome. Building on it began in 1027 and it remains one of the largest Romanesque cathedrals in the world! After the 2 tours we had free time to eat and everyone split into groups and went to town or had a picnic with friends. We had a lot of fun and would love to visit again someday!

** Our students are with their host families for the weekend. We’re looking forward to posting about their adventures on Monday when we leave for the Alps! Schönes Wochenende! **
