Day 3: Gymnasium Walldorf & Freibad (July 2)
By Jake and Peter
Our first full day in Walldorf was very hot, but we were all excited to arrive at the Gymnasium (school) with our host siblings. Some of us even biked to school! The school arranged for us to visit different kinds of classes - from 5th and 6th grade English classes (where students interviewed us with prepared questions) to music classes and even ethics classes. The classes were 45 minutes and in between classes they had breaks for 5-10 minutes. The teachers were friendly as well as the students. Something that was surprising was that the students are allowed to leave the building when they aren’t in class. Not only that but multiple schools are in the same building. (Editor note: you can tell they had a busy day at school; they didn’t even take many photos!)
After school we all went to the Freibad (a large municipal park with a lake and multiple swimming pools). Because it was probably the hottest day of the year in Germany (over 100 degrees! And Germans don’t really do air conditioning…) it seemed like almost the whole town was there. We had a blast and it was a great day. Something surprising was how all the people were so friendly in Germany on the lake. We made new friends and had fun hanging out with our host siblings and their friends. Some of us stayed at the lake until after 7pm! It seems like everyone knows each other in Germany, and we all agree that everyone is really welcoming.
