Day 4: Heidelberg

Day 4: Day Trip to Heidelberg! (Thursday, July 3)

By Mikalah and Marley

Today we (our American group plus our host siblings) went to Heidelberg, a city founded in the 1100s! We took the train there and then took the trolley train into the city, where Herr Probst, an English and History teacher at Gymnasium Walldorf, gave us a walking tour of some of Heidelberg’s important spots, including a stop at the University (founded in 1387!)

We hiked the Philosopher’s Walk (der Philosophenweg), named because of the great views and winding cobblestone paths that inspire contemplation. We traveled across the Alte Brücke (the old bridge) into the city before taking the funicular (a trolley that transports people up the side of a mountain) to Heidelberg Castle. We walked on top of a massive wine barrel (inside the castle) and learned about the castle’s history. After our morning tour, we had the afternoon for free time to shop, walk, and eat some traditional German food!

** We have more pictures with our hosts on our trip to Heidelberg, but we are waiting for parent permission slips so we can share them publicly. **

** Now with more pictures of Walldorf students! **
